Third period blunders cost Titan in loss to Eagles

BATHURST – After a 3-1 loss to the Cape Breton Eagles in their home opener on Friday night, the Acadie-Bathurst Titan were back on the ice Saturday afternoon to take on that same Eagles squad at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.

The first period almost ended with a scoreless tie but Brooklyn Kalmikov made sure that was not the case with his first of the season to give Cape Breton a 1-0 lead with 59 seconds remaining in the opening frame. That is how the period would end as the Eagles outshot the Titan 15-7. Kalmikov was back at it again 2:30 into the second period netting his second of the game to make it 2-0. Not long after that Riley Kidney found the back of the net for his first QMJHL goal in just the second game of his career. Alexis Dube picked up the lone helper at 3:53 as the Titan were back within one.

A powerplay goal from Adam McCormick restored a two-goal edge for the Eagles at 12:29 and that would be the score after 40 minutes of play. The Eagles picked up right where they left off in the third period as Jarrett Baker scored 31 seconds in followed back-to-back markers from Nathan Larose at 4:52 and 7:09 giving the visitors a 6-1 lead. Another Titan rookie notched his first career goal midway through the period as Cole Huckins jumped on a rebound to cut the deficit to four goals. Logan Chisholm and Yan Aucoin got the assists at 9:11. Aucoin found the back of the net himself with a heavy slapshot from the point at 14:59. The powerplay goal was assisted by Huckins as well as Evan MacKinnon.

The Eagles would keep the home team from mounting any sort of comeback as they would take it 6-3 three to sweep the weekend back-to-back. Tristan Berube was once again busy between the pipes for the Titan in this one stopping 40 shots.
