Our 18 | Time for Titan to Turn the Corner

QMJHL

It’s a foregone conclusion that the 2020-21 QMJHL season will take on a dramatically different appearance. For the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, the expectation is that its results will follow suit. The only team mathematically eliminated from the 2020 President Cup Playoffs at the time of the league-wide stoppage due to COVID-19 in March, the Titan aims to punch its postseason ticket this campaign for the first time since claiming the 2018 Memorial Cup.

To do so, the team will rely on a fine combination of youth and veteran influences. Driving the bus up front will be established skaters such as winger Felix-Antoine Marcotty, an acquisition from the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in the off-season. He’ll join Mathieu Desgagnés, the top returning scorer from last year’s Titan squad, Mark Rumsey, entering his first full season on the North Shore after being dealt by the Moncton Wildcats last year, as well as fourth-year winger Logan Chisholm. A pair of centers, Riley Kidney and Cole Huckins, will look to build on strong rookie seasons in 2019-20.

On defense, the club bolstered the roster by completing a deal with the Cape Breton Eagles at the Draft to pick up 2019-20 Second Team All-Star, Adam McCormick. He’ll lead a back end that features 18-year-old Cole Larkin, back for his second season in a Titan sweater, while 2020 first rounder Lane Hinkley vies for a spot on the club and Latvian Harijs Brants is expected to rejoin the team in the coming weeks.

Also expected to make his eventual debut is Czech goaltender Jan Bednar, the second overall selection at the 2020 CHL Import Draft and the second ranked European netminder of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Also challenging for a spot between the pipes is Tommy DaSilva, making his third stop in the league after appearances with the Saint John Sea Dogs and Gatineau Olympiques. Mario Durocher, owner of 516 career QMJHL regular season victories, returns as Head Coach to guide this developing group.

After notching just 20 victories over the past two seasons, the Titan has reached a point where trending upwards is, quite simply, the only option. This year’s roster should provide the proper jumping off point for the organization in its quest to advance through the overall standings.
