BOUCHERVILLE, Friday October 17, 2014 – The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League today announced the coaching staff for Team QMJHL that will compete in Games 5 and 6 of the 2014 SUBWAY® Super Series.
Benoit Groulx, Head Coach and General Manager of the Gatineau Olympiques, will work behind the bench for both Team QMJHL games that include contests on Tuesday November 18 in Bathurst and Thursday November 20 in Rimouski. Joining Groulx behind the bench as Assistant Coach will be Drummondville Voltigeurs Head Coach Martin Raymond. Mario Pouliot of the host Titan will also be serving as an Assistant Coach in Bathurst for Game 5, while Serge Beausoleil of the host Océanic will serve as Assistant Coach for Game 6 in Rimouski.
The SUBWAY® Super Series features regional teams of CHL All-Stars competing against the Russian National Junior Team in a six-game event serving as an integral part of the identification process for Team Canada prior to the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. Last season the CHL prevailed with their ninth series win in eleven years of this event with a 3-2-0-1 record.
Benoit Groulx, 46, will be the head coach of Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship, which will be held Dec. 26, 2014 to Jan. 5, 2015 in Montreal and Toronto. He was an assistant coach under Brent Sutter with Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship, where Canada finished fourth. The Hull native, is in his second stint as head coach of the QMJHL’s Gatineau Olympiques, having taken the team to three Memorial Cups (2003, 2004 and 2008). Groulx also served as an assistant coach under Sutter during the 2007 Canada-Russia Super Series, and was named as head coach of Canada’s National Junior Team for the 2009 IIHF World Junior Championship, before stepping down to accept a coaching position with the AHL’s Rochester Americans.
Raymond Martin will serve as an assistant coach with Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship, scheduled for Dec. 26, 2014 to Jan. 5, 2015 in Toronto, Ont., and Montreal, Que. He won the gold medal with Canada’s Men summer National Under-18 team at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial U18 Cup last August and was head coach of Team Canada at the 2004 U17 World Hockey Challenge when he won the bronze medal.
