Titan finishes 2016 with wild 7-5 victory in Saint John
Emmanuelle Parent

The Acadie-Bathurst Titan looked to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss Friday night and found exactly what they were looking for in a wild seven-to-five victory Saturday afternoon against the first-place Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Titan would open the scoring less than two minutes into the game on the power play after Titan captain Jeffrey Viel put home his 22nd of the season with assists going to Christophe Boivin and Antoine Morand. The Sea Dogs would score twice to take a 2-1 lead with Matthew Highmore and Bokondji Imama registering goals for the Sea Dogs before the Titan would score twice in a 25 second span. Vladimir Kuznetsov notched his 10th of the year from Matthew Ferrari and Olivier Desjardins while Zach Malatesta would put in his own rebound for his fourth on the campaign from Jordan Maher giving the Titan a 3-2 lead after one period of play.

Saint John would tie the game early in the second period thanks to Alexandre Lafrenière making it a 3-3 game after 40 minutes.

Imama would notch his second of the game just 27 seconds into the third period to give the Sea Dogs their lead back, but with under nine minutes to play in the game, the Titan would open up for three unanswered goals. Christophe Boivin would score his 24th of the year from Malatesta and Adam Holwell to tie the game at four goals apiece. Noah Dobson would blast home his second of the season from Malatesta and Daniil Miromanov to give the Titan their third lead of the game, and on the power play, Antoine Morand would wire home his 14th of the year from Félix and Christophe Boivin making it a 6-4 game.

After pulling their goaltender for an extra attacker, Alexandre Bernier would get the Sea Dogs within one, but it would be all for naught as Jordan Maher would take a pass from Viel to launch his 12th of the season into an empty net, sealing the Titan’s 7-5 victory.

Anthony Dumont-Bouchard made his third start in a sixty-hour period and see his record improve to 2-1 as a Titan and 9-4 overall on the season, stopping 37 of 42 shots. Callum Booth saw his record fall to 13-10 on the year, allowing six goals on 35 shots faced in 56:20 of play.

QUICK HITS

After leveling the Islanders with seven hits the night before. Titan defenceman Zach Malatesta notched his first goal in a Titan uniform. In three games with the Titan, Malatesta has a goal, three assists and a plus-four rating.

Christophe Boivin’s goal tied him with Tomy Joly for eighth overall in goals scored in a Titan uniform. Boivin’s 83 goals now has him four back from tying Jonathan Lessard for seventh overall.

Vladimir Kuznetsov becomes the seventh Titan player this season to reach the double-digit mark in goals. Kuznetsov has enjoyed a very productive December, scoring seven goals and adding five assists for 12 points in 10 games during the final month of 2016.

Christophe Boivin was named the third star of the game, while the Sea Dogs’ Bokondji Imama was named the second star. Antoine Morand, for his game-winning-goal, was named the game’s first star.
