Titan fall to Islanders in #HockeyWeekend opener

BATHURST – The Acadie-Bathurst Titan kicked off the fifth annual #HockeyWeekend with the Charlottetown Islanders in town Thursday night. Despite a slow start the Titan were able to make a game of it and give their fans some excitement.

At 8:43 of the first period Noah Laaouan put the first goal on the board to give the Islanders the lead. A little over two minutes later Xavier Bernard made it 2-0 for the visitors at 10:55. Liam Leonard got the Titan on the board at 14:35 with his seventh of the season. Evan MacKinnon and Jack Tucker got the helpers on the powerplay tally. It would remain 2-1 Islanders after one.

The home team came out firing in the second period as they managed to tie the game and then take the lead. Cole Rafuse tied it just 1:21 into the frame with his 11th of the campaign assisted by Jesse Sutton and Benjamin Roode. Three minutes later Yan-Cedric Gaudreault capitalized on a rebound to put his team up 3-2 on the powerplay. Rafuse and Mathieu Desgagnes notched the assists. The Islanders tied it at three midway through the second thanks to Lukas Cormier and then Laaouan scored his second of the contest to put Charlottetown back in front 4-3. They would hold that lead going into the third period.

In the third period the Titan had chances but weren’t able to beat Matthew Welsh or the crossbar as the Islanders held on to take it 5-3 with an insurance goal from Jordan Maher at 11:35. Tyriq Outen made 20 saves for the Titan in relief for Grametbauer who allowed two goals on eight shots.
