Titan completes sweep of Remparts with 4-1 victory

TC Media – Charles Lalande

The Acadie-Bathurst Titan are off to the second round of the QMJHL Playoffs for the first time since 2008 thanks to a four-to-one victory over the Quebec Remparts Wednesday night at the Vidéotron Centre.

The Remparts opened the scoring mid-way through the first period with Philipp Kurashev giving the home side a 1-0 lead. Antoine Morand would even things up just over two minutes later with his first goal of the post-season, tipping home a shot from Vladimir Kuznetsov. Christophe Boivin would also pick up an asssit on the play, sending the game tied 1-1 into the intermission.

Rodrigo Abols found himself in the right place to deflect home his third goal of the post-season 3:20 into the second period to give the Titan the lead. Noah Dobson’s point shot off a pass from Jordan Maher initiated the successful scoring chance. The Titan would take the 2-1 lead into the dressing room at the end of two periods of play.

While the Remparts withstood yet another period of a heavy barrage of shots on goal, the Titan would put the game – and the series out of reach with two empty net goals in the final 1:36 of play. Jordan Maher would fire his second goal of the playoffs from just outside the Remparts’ blue line on a pass from Zachary Malatesta to make it 3-1 for the Titan. Christophe Boivin would follow that up with his third of the post-season with 40 seconds remaining on the clock.

Athony Dumont-Bouchard stopped 19 of 20 shots faced to pick up his fourth-straight victory in the playoffs while Dereck Baribeau got the start for the Remparts and allowed two goals on 41 shots in 59 minutes of play.

Titan rookie defenceman Noah Dobson completed a stellar first round on the blue line recording four assists and posting a league high plus-eight rating over the four games played against the Remparts. The regular season leader among rookies recorded ten shots on goal against the Remparts.

The Titan heavily out-shot the Remparts 169 to 81 in the four-game series, never allowing more than 22 shots to be recorded in a single game. 10 of the 12 periods played also saw the Titan limit the Remparts to single-digit shots on goal.

In completing the four-game sweep, the Titan have achieved their first sweep since the 2006 playoffs when they swept the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in four games during the 2006 Quarter-Finals. It also marked the second time since moving to Bathurst in 1999 that the Titan swept the Remparts. In the first round of the 2001 QMJHL Playoffs, the Titan swept the Remparts on their way to their second President Cup finals appearance in three seasons.

With five of the eight first-round series match-ups completed, the Titan now await the identity of their second-round opponents. The second round is scheduled to get underway Friday, April 7, 2017 and in the coming days, the schedule and opponent will be finalized. Tickets for the second round go on-sale Friday, March 31st and will be available for purchase at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre box office, by phone at 549-3200 (local) and 1-877-549-3200 (toll free) and at some point during the day, online at
