BATHURST – In front of 3524 fans at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre, the Acadie-Bathurst hoisted the Rogers President Cup after a 2-1 win over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in game six on Sunday. Jeffrey Viel and Samuel L’Italien scored the goals as the Titan took the championship series 4-2.
After an Armada turnover, Viel gathered the puck in the neutral zone before skating in over the blue line and firing a wrist shot past Emile Samson from the slot to open the scoring. The goal came unassisted at 6:37. The home side kept the Armada to just three shots on goal in the first period and went to the locker room up 1-0 after one period.
The second period was controlled by the Armada for the most part but L’Italien capitalised on a 2-on-1 rush late in the frame to double the Titan lead. His fourth of the season, and the game-winner, was assisted by Ethan Crossman and Adam Holwell at 17:01.
Leading 2-0 through 40 minutes of play, the Titan knew their was 20 minutes of hockey between them and the President Cup, so they went into defensive mode. Despite being out shot in the third period they kept the Armada’s big offensive guns quiet for most of the third period and a big part of that was their face-off success. The Titan finished the game with 41 face-off wins to the Armada’s 17. Drake Batherson did manage to get one past Evan Fitzpatrick with 2:45 remaining but that was as close as they would come.
With the win the Titan became the 2018 Rogers President Cup champions and booked their ticket to the 100th Memorial Cup in Regina, Saskatchewan. The captain of the Titan, Jeffrey Viel was awarded the Guy Lafleur Trophy as the Playoff MVP.
