REGINA, Sask. – The Acadie-Bathurst Titan started off the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup against the Western Hockey League champion Swift Current Broncos on Saturday. Samuel Asselin had two-goals, including a short-handed tally in the second period, and Liam Murphy potted the overtime winner as the Titan topped the Broncos 4-3.

Asselin opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the game when he redirected Olivier Galipeau’s point shot past Stuart Skinner. Jordan Maher also picked up an assist on the goal at 8:02. Tyler Steenbergen scored on the powerplay for the Broncos to even it up 1-1 at 12:18 before Giorgio Estephan gave Swift Current the lead at 18:59, making it 2-1 after one.

With less than two minutes to play in the second period Asselin beat Skinner five-hole on a breakaway to tie the game at two goals apiece. Jeffrey Viel notched the lone helper on the shorthanded tally. Estephan put the Broncos back in front with nine seconds left in the frame with his second of the game, as the Broncos went into the second intermission leading by a goal.

Adam Holwell jumped on a rebound in front at 5:51 of the third period and once again we were tied. The Titan’s second shorthanded goal of the game was assisted by German Rubtsov and Viel. With the game still knotted up 3-3 after 60 minutes of play, we were headed to overtime. It took just 2:58 to find a winner as Liam Murphy muscled his way to the net and tapped in the game-winning goal with helpers going to Noah Dobson and Viel.
