This afternoon, Acadie-Bathurst was hosting the Rimouski Océanic and Mason McDonald was making his first start in nets in the QMJHL.
Despite an advantage in shots in the 1st period, 13-6, Rimouski couldn’t score. However the Titan also couldn’t score despite 2 good scoring chances, we were still scoreless after 20 minutes played.
The Titan were still outshot in the second period, 16-8. Alexandre Gosselin (1st career goal in the QMJHL) gave the Titan the lead around the midway mark of the second but just a few minutes later the visitors tied things up . Zach O’Brien (5th) regave the lead to the home team with what was a highlight real shorthanded goal that will definitely make the plays of the week. The second finished with the Titan ahead 2-1.
The 3rd period gave us some wide open hockey with 5 goals being scored and shots being 19-14 for Rimouski. The visitors tied things up early in the 3rd but Alexandre Gosselin (2nd) regave the Titan a one goal lead. With a little less than 5 minutes left in the 3rd, Rimouski scored 2 quick goals to get their first lead of the game. With 2.8 seconds left in the third frame, Raphael Lafontaine (2nd) sent the crowd in a frenzy with the tying goal.
Acadie-Bathurst dominated the overtime period with 7 shots and some very good scoring chances but couldn’t score, forcing a shootout.
Adam Zboril was the only skater to score in the shootout, giving the Titan a 5-4 win.
Mason McDonald, who was starting his young career, was extraordinary with 46 saves. Alexandre Gosselin scored twice and Zach O’Brien had a goal and an assist. Sean Girard finished the night with 5 hits.
The 3 next Titan games wil lbe on the road, Tuesday, October 2nd, at Halifax, Friday, October 5th at Baie-Comeau and Saturday, October 6th in Chicoutimi.
