Armada eliminates Titan in seven games
The Acadie-Bathurst Titan saw their 2016-2017 season come to an end Tuesday night as they fell by a seven-to-one score to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in the seventh and deciding game in their best-of-seven quarter-final series.
The first period did not start the way the Titan were hoping for as Alex Barré-Boulet beat Titan starting goaltender Anthony Dumont-Bouchard less than a minute into the contest to give the Armada a 1-0 lead. Joël Teasdale would double the Armada’s advance late in the period after multiple taps at the puck dislodged the disc from under Dumont-Bouchard’s pad and past the red line to put the home side up by two goals at the end of 20 minutes.
The second period saw the Titan’s situation grow worse as the Armada would register four more goals during the middle frame. Barré-Boulet would score twice, completing his hat trick while Teasdale and Alexandre Alain would record singles sending the Armada into the second intermission leading 6-0.
Yvan Mongo would put the Armada ahead by seven before Titan defenceman Zachary Malatesta would end Armada goaltender Samuel Montembeault’s shutout bid at the 8:02 mark of the third period. His first of the playoffs was assisted by Daniil Miromanov and Rodrigo Abols. While the goal ensured the Titan would go the entire length of the regular and post-season without being shut out, the score would remain 7-1 as the final buzzer sounded.
Dumont-Bouchard (L, 4-1), making his first start since Game 1 of the series, allowed seven goals on 36 shots while Montembeault (W, 8-1) allowed a single goal on 25 shots faced in 54:31 of play before Francis Leclerc (ND, 0-2) took over for the final 5:29 and stopped the only shot he faced.
A FAREWELL TO KINGS
The Major Junior careers for three Titan players came to an end Tuesday night in Boisbriand. Defenceman Zach Malatesta along with forwards Rodrigo Abols and Christophe Boivin ended their tenures with the red and gold and will graduate from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
In 33 regular season games since joining the Titan in December, Malatesta scored eight goals, recorded 20 assists and registered a plus-25 rating.
Joining the Titan in October of 2016, Abols suited up for 52 regular season games and was one of six players on the Titan roster to reach the fifty-point plateau (18 goals, 32 assists) and was a plus-16.
Fifth all-time in games played, third all-time in goals, seventh all-time in assists, fifth all-time in points, seventh all-time in power play goals. Since joining the Titan at the start of the 2013-2014 season after being drafted in the first round of the 2013 QMJHL Draft, Christophe Boivin finishes his career with 255 games, 102 goals, 117 assists, 219 points and 30 power play goals and his name forever etched into the team’s record books.
